A Rosenberg by Any Other Name: A History of Jewish Name Changing in America
12:00pm - 1:30pm
Dr. Kerstin Fermaglich (Michigan State University) will discuss the little-known history of Jewish name changing in 20th Century New York City, which she explores in her most recent book, A Rosenberg by Any Other Name. Thousands of Jewish men, women and children legally and voluntarily changed their names in response to an upsurge in antisemitism, while remaining active members of the Jewish community. A Rosenberg by Any Other Name received the 2019 Saul Viener Book Prize.
