We’ve reached the point in the spring quarter when the weeks blend into an endless cycle of lectures, Canvas notifications and Starbucks runs. It's easy to forget that life exists beyond University Boulevard and Evans Avenue; however, the lively city of Denver is just a short trip away, waiting for you to explore it. The Mile High City features endless vintage markets, cheap and delicious eats and live music that won’t break your bank. Whether you’re riding the light rail, hopping on a scooter or carpooling with friends, Denver has a ton to offer within 10 miles of campus. Here are my top recommendations, with details and distance from campus listed for each.

Mile High Meter (1-10): This rating is based on the location's overall vibe, price and uniqueness. Plus, a special tip for each recommendation!

Mile High Meter: 8/10 - Best graphic t-shirt award

Every second and last Saturday from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

8.0 Miles from University of Denver: 22-min drive, 55-min public transport

If you're on the hunt for funky clothes, vintage gems or a new favorite tote bag, RiNo’s vintage markets might be your new favorite weekend stop. Held every second and last Saturday of the month, these pop-up markets are packed with unique fashion, handmade jewelry, quirky home goods and usually a live DJ. The atmosphere is always lively and welcoming — perfect for a solo stroll or an afternoon out with friends. Located just steps from the Denver Central Market, it’s easy to grab a coffee or bite to eat nearby. Pro tip: bring cash or plan to use Venmo and a reusable tote — you’ll need it!

Mile High Meter: 7/10 - Accessible and free!

University of Denver stop next to Centennial Towers

Whether you're heading downtown for a concert, to Union Station for a bite to eat or just escaping campus, the Denver Light Rail is your ticket to adventure. It is completely free with your student ID and can take you just about anywhere across the city. Taking the light rail doesn’t just save you money; it’s also a more sustainable way to get around. According to RTD, each trip taken via light rail emits 45% less carbon per mile than a single passenger car. So, your weekend adventures can be low-cost and low-impact. You can use GPS on your phone to track the trains, estimate your times of departure and arrival and identify your destination based on train schedules. Grab a friend, hop on at the DU stop next to Centennial Towers and see where the tracks take you.

Mile High Meter: 10/10 - Get a Crookie at Izzio’s bakery!

An energetic food hall filled with everything from wood-fired pizza to sushi; Central Market is a must-stop for foodies. It is open for most of the day, so you can stop in for a latte and some studying, or head over for lunch with friends on the weekend. Keep an eye out for Not Your Mother’s Deli to grab a fresh bagel or Izzio’s bakery to snag a very popular (and delicious) cookie croissant.

Mile High Meter: 8/10 - Go-to spot for burger and fries

Open 11 a.m. – 8 p.m. Sun-Thurs and 11 a.m. – 11 p.m. Fri-Sat

0.2 miles from University of Denver: 3-min drive, 5-min walk

Just across the street from campus, Mustard’s is a tried-and-true favorite for hot dogs, burgers and chili cheese fries. It’s casual, quick and always hits the spot after a long day of classes or a late-night study session. Bonus: Open late on weekends.

Mile High Meter: 7/10 - Bring a blanket and chill by the pond

2.6 miles from University of Denver: 8-min drive, 25-min public transport

Despite Denver’s beautiful skyline and crowded streets, Washington Park might take the cake for the heart of the city. It offers a scenic escape, with its open green spaces, serene pond and mountain views. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down and indulge in a little peace amidst a busy student schedule. You’ll find students and Denver locals alike biking on the outer loop, playing spike ball on the lawn or soaking up the sun with a good book. It’s the perfect spot to reset after a hectic week or soak up sunshine on a lazy Saturday.

Mile High Meter: 10/10 – It gets busy fast, so show up early!

Every Sunday 9 a.m.–  p.m. (May–October)

1.2 miles from University of Denver: 5-min drive, 10-min public transport

From May through October, South Pearl Street transforms into one of Denver’s most beloved farmers markets, and it’s just around the corner from DU. Lined with over 100 local vendors, the market offers everything from organic produce and handmade soaps to fresh-cut flowers, pastries and farm-raised meats. You can grab a made-to-order breakfast burrito, sip on a seasonal lavender latte, and browse stands filled with Colorado-made goods. The street is always bustling with live acoustic music and neighborhood charm. It’s also a pet-friendly venue, so expect to meet a few new furry friends while you wander. Pro tip: get there early! The good stuff goes fast, and on-street parking fills up quickly.

Mile High Meter: 7/10 - First Fridays are a must

Every first Friday of the month, starting at 5 p.m.

4.7 miles from University of Denver: 17-min drive, 22-min public transport

Denver’s Santa Fe Art District comes alive on the first Friday of every month. “First Friday Art Walks” stretch across several blocks and feature dozens of open galleries showcasing a variety of art styles. You can view contemporary pieces, photography, sculptures and street art. Local musicians set the vibe, food trucks line the sidewalks, and artists often set up pop-up booths right on the pavement. It’s a casual, come-as-you-are kind of event that’s perfect for a low-pressure night out. Most galleries offer free entry, and the energy is as lively as the art itself.

Mile High Meter: 10/10 - Homework meets lattes and ice cream

Open every day from 7 a.m. – 8 p.m.

6.0 miles from University of Denver: 21-min drive, 44-min public transport

Located inside the Dairy Block downtown, the Denver Milk Market is a modern food hall that’s equal parts study spot and social hangout. With 16 different vendors under one roof serving a diverse selection of food and treats, there’s no shortage of options to fuel your afternoon. The space is bright and open, with plenty of seating and new views. Grab a cold brew, pick a cozy spot in the lounge area and knock out that research paper or tough assignment you’ve been procrastinating. You can even reward yourself with gelato after you hit submit. The Milk Market is a great place for the days you want to be productive but not stuck in your usual library spot. You can also check out their events online to find some fun Denver activities like their weekly Drag Brunch.

Mile High Meter: 6/10 - Grab a seasonal latte from their cafe

Open every day from 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

4.3 miles from University of Denver: 15-min drive, 30-min public transport

There’s something special about wandering through a local bookstore, and in Denver, Tattered Cover stands out as a true favorite. More than just a place to buy books, it’s a cozy, quiet space with reading nooks, an in-house café and a great curated selection that ranges from required course texts to obscure poetry and local authors. You can find the latest Emily Henry book or get your hands on your favorite fiction book series. The space is perfect for browsing literature for hours or getting some work done, always offering a quiet kind of magic that makes the trip worth it.

Mile High Meter: 9/10 - Shake up your playlists and check out a new band

4.8 miles from University of Denver: 16-min drive, 40-min public transport

If live music is your thing, the Bluebird Theater is a must-visit location in Denver. This historic venue on Colfax has been hosting concerts since 1913 and remains one of the best spots in the city to catch rising artists before they hit it big. With a cozy capacity of around 550, you're always close to the stage, making every show feel personal and immersive. The Bluebird's lineup is as eclectic as it is exciting: from NPR's “Tiny Desk Contest On The Road” visit to Denver in June, featuring the 2025 contest winner Ruby Ibarra and a surprise Tiny Desk alum, to electronic artists like Daniel Allan. Don’t miss out on themed nights to spend with your friends like Bluebird's “Take a Dance on Me: ABBA Disco Night.” Tickets are usually affordable, but they go fast, so it’s smart to plan ahead and book early. Nonetheless, the Bluebird Theater is perfect for a spontaneous Friday night out or a break from the usual campus routine.

Mile High Meter: 10/10 - Offering student discounts!

3.7 miles from University of Denver: 15-min drive, 36-min public transport

The Mayan Theatre is a hidden gem for film lovers looking for something beyond the mainstream. This theatre showcases a rotating lineup of indie films, foreign features and cult classics. The theatre resembles a performing arts center with plenty of seats and all of the right movie theatre snacks. An added plus is their student discounts and reduced costs on weekdays. If you’re ready to swap your streaming queue for something a little more memorable, the Mayan is worth the trip.

College is more than classes it’s about growing into yourself. Exploring Denver can lead to new friendships, unforgettable memories and — believe it or not — stress relief. A recent article from The Guardian states that immersing yourself in urban environments, whether it's walking in city parks, visiting local gems, or wandering through new neighborhoods, can enhance mental well-being by reducing stress and boosting mood. So don’t just study in Denver, experience it!
