CAHSS Summertime "Bests" Part 2

Part two in a three-part CAHSS News series.

Soon after CAHSS graduating students depart for the summer, things quiet down enough for many of us to breathe, get caught up and dream up innovative ways to better support our CAHSS students, faculty and each other in the upcoming school year.

The CAHSS newsroom asked CAHSS staff members to share what they like best about being on campus over the summer, including their picks for best lunch spots, best strolls around campus, best hideaways to get work done, best place to hold meetings outside and best ways to de-stress and cool off. Here’s what they had to say.

Hillary Hutcherson, interim director, Marketing & Communications

Best part of being on campus over the summer? I love the emptiness of the buildings and campus; it’s such a great change of pace. It’s quiet, it’s slower and much more relaxed so I can appreciate everything more.

Best lunch spots? Birdcall, Jerusalem and Illegal Pete’s.

Best hideaways to get work done? Empty classrooms in Sturm Hall or my couch at home.

Best strolls around campus? I like walking west down Asbury and checking out the houses.

Best ways (or places) to de-stress and cool off? An iced coffee from Kaladi’s.

Nathan McNichols, facilities operations manager

Best part of being on campus over the summer? I enjoy seeing projects come to life — from drawings and plans to real, tangible creations.

Best lunch spots? Under the trees in the shady area between the Mary Reed building and the Evans Chapel.

Best hideaways to get work done? The desk in front of the window AC inside the Media, Film & Journalism Studies' administrative lobby!

Best place to hold meetings outside? Originally spearheaded by the College's Center for Judaic Studies in 2010, the Holocaust Memorial Social Action Site is a beautiful amphitheater and one of the College's most powerful and peaceful pieces of real estate.

Best strolls around campus? Dan's Garden is where I go when I need to clear my head, spend some time in quiet meditation or simply practice gratitude for the life and beauty around me —highly recommend!

Angela Mitchell, marketing & communication manager, Lamont School of Music

Best part of being on campus over the summer? I love how quiet it is! I’m able to get so much work done uninterrupted.

Best lunch spots? Banh Mi Station or LaBelle Rosette.

Best ways (or places) to de-stress and cool off? I’ve gone for lunchtime runs a couple times through the University Park neighborhood. It’s so lovely there! It definitely doesn’t cool me off in the summer heat but certainly is a good way to relieve stress.
