The University of Denver's Department of Media, Film & Journalism Studies (MFJS), part of the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences (CAHSS), proudly celebrates outstanding achievements by faculty and students at this year’s Broadcast Education Association Festival of Media Arts, one of the nation’s premier competitions recognizing excellence in media production and storytelling.

Professor Kareem El Damanhoury received two of the festival’s highest honors for his video diary chronicling the Hajj pilgrimage. His work earned Best of Competition in the Feature News Faculty Category and Best of Festival in the News Faculty Category, distinguishing his piece across all faculty-level festival submissions.

MFJS alumni Lily Haverstock, Michael Cheuvront, and Christian Moreno earned third place in the TV Long Feature Reporting Category for their mini-documentary, Hockey Heals: How One Player Beat the Odds and Got Back on the Ice.” The compelling piece highlights resilience, recovery, and the transformative power of sport.

In the same category, alumni Madeleine Lebovic, Clara Normand, and Shaundrea Roberts received an Award of Excellence for their mini-documentary, Mercury Cafe Closes as Its Slam Poetry Team Represents Colorado at Regionals. Their project captures a pivotal cultural moment while celebrating the enduring spirit of Colorado’s creative community.

These awards reflect the department’s commitment to excellence in journalism, documentary storytelling, and hands-on media education. Congratulations to Professor El Damanhoury and our talented student creators for their national recognition and continued dedication to impactful storytelling.
