Carol Helstosky, professor of history in the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, has been awarded the Marraro Prize from the Society for Italian Historical Studies in recognition of her recent book examining modern Italy and the global art market.

The Marraro Prize is presented to scholars whose work makes a significant contribution to the field of Italian history. Helstosky’s book, “Italian Forgers: The Art Market and the Weight of the Past in Modern Italy,” offers a critical analysis of the international art market and explores how global economic forces shape and are shaped by individuals and communities within Italy. Through extensive research and revision, her work highlights the cultural, social, and economic consequences of art circulation in a modern Italian context.

“I was surprised and honored to receive the Marraro Prize for my book,” Helstosky said. “It is a special honor to receive this recognition from one's colleagues in the field of Italian history (a rich and varied field of scholarship). I researched, wrote, and re-wrote my book in my efforts to critically analyze the international art market and its impact on individuals and communities within modern Italy. It is gratifying to be recognized for these efforts.”
