Non-Certificate Registration 

Non-certificate students and other attendees may register at daily rate of $30. On Thursday, August 5, the daily non-certificate registration rate is $15, as roughly half the day is devoted to assisting certificate students with research projects. 

Non-certificate registration deadline: 5 p.m. MDT on Thursday, July 29.

Mechanisms and Legacy of Nazi Art Plunder

9–9:15 a.m.: Welcome and introductions with ACE director. Introduction of planning team members.  

9:15–10:30 a.m.: How it Happened: Nazi Art Plunder and the Ongoing Quest for Restitution. Led by Elizabeth Campbell.

10:30–10:45 a.m.: Break 

10:45–12: Göring's Man in Paris. Led by Jonathan Petropoulos. This talk examines a case study of Nazi art dealer Bruno Lohse's role in the plunder and continued dealing after the war.

12–1 p.m.: Lunch 

1–2:30 p.m.: Panel on the Stewardship of Nazi-Era Art: Legal and Ethical Challenges, including Nicholas O’Donnell, partner at Sullivan & Worcester LLP, Boston; Katrin Stoll, Neumeister Auction House, Munich; Dr. Christoph Heinrich, Frederick and Jan Mayer Director, Denver Art Museum. Moderated by Elizabeth Campbell.

2:45–4:15 p.m.:  Claimants' Panel, including Simon Goodman, descendant of Fritz and Louise Gutmann and author of The Orpheus Clock, Nina McGehee, descendant of Siegfried Laemmle, and Marianne Rosenberg, Rosenberg & Co. 9:15–10 a.m.: Framed: Evidence gleaned from direct observation of paintings. Led by Renée Albiston, associate museum director of Kirkland Museum Fine & Decorative Art. 

10–10:15 a.m.: Break 

10:15–11:15 a.m.: Using U.S. Archival Sources: NARA, Fold3.com, led by NARA archivist Sylvia Naylor. Sources at Smithsonian Institution and National Gallery of Art. Moderated by Elizabeth Campbell and MacKenzie Mallon, Specialist, Provenance at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. 

11:15–11:30 a.m.: Break

11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.: Resources at the Monuments Men Foundation, led by Anna Bottinelli, president, Monuments Men Foundation for the Preservation of Art; Resources at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum, led by Megan Lewis, reference librarian, United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. Moderated by Elizabeth Campbell.

12:30–1:30 p.m.: Lunch 

1:30–2:30 p.m. Virtual visit to DU Hampden Art Study Center, led by Geoffrey Shamos, Curator of University Art Collections and Director of the Vicki Myhren Gallery. Sarah Magnatta, PhD, Assistant Professor of Art History at DU, will describe how she incorporated provenance research into a graduate research practicum.

2:45–4:15 p.m.: Challenges and Opportunities at Academic Museums and Galleries, with Geoffrey Shamos, curator of University of Denver Art Collections; Jennifer McComas, Curator of European and American Art, Eskenazi Museum of Art, Indiana University; and Antonia Bartoli, Curator of Provenance at Yale University Art Gallery.

1–2 p.m.: Resources at the Getty Research Institute. Led by Sandra van Ginhoven, Head of Project for the Study of Collecting and Provenance; Sally McKay, Head of Research Services.

9:15–10 a.m.: Writing a Provenance Narrative. Led by MacKenzie Mallon and Renée Albiston. 

10–10:15 a.m.: Break 

10:15 a.m–12 p.m.: Certificate students work in small groups on research projects. Facilitated by MacKenzie Mallon and Renée Albiston. 

12–1 p.m.: Lunch

1–1:45 p.m.: Making Research Public: Websites, Exhibitions and Transparency. Led by Jacques Schumacher, Rosalinde and Arthur Gilbert Provenance and Spoliation Curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and MacKenzie Mallon.  

1:45–2 p.m.: Break 

2–3:30: Certificate student small groups work on provenance narratives and presentations for symposium.

3:30–3:45 p.m.: Break 

3:45–4:15 p.m.: “Coffee Session”: How is your Work Going? Q&A with MacKenzie Mallon and Renée Albiston.   

4:15–5 p.m.: Certificate students complete work on presentations for tomorrow’s symposium in breakout sessions, facilitated by MacKenzie Mallon and Renée Albiston.

1–2:30 p.m.: Jane Milosch, visiting professorial fellow, University of Glasgow. “A Decade of International Provenance Research and Exchange at the Smithsonian (2009-2019): Looking Back, Looking Forward.”

2:45–3:30 p.m.: Debrief: What have we learned? Q&A with the experts and concluding remarks by the planning team.
