Stephanie Kang is Assistant Professor of Art History and Critical Race and Ethnic Studies at the University of Denver.

Professional Biography

Stephanie Kang specializes in contemporary art, queer theory, and critical race and ethnic studies. Her current book project specifically considers the work of several contemporary artists, who imagine new possibilities for subverting panoptic systems of control. By analyzing their performances, videos, installations, and sculptures, her research investigates how artists are utilizing a variety of queer tactics to transform the cultural logic, generating a new means of survivance. She received an MFA in visual art from Washington University in St. Louis and a PhD in art history from the Ohio State University. She has curated several exhibitions and was previously an assistant curator at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati. Her essays have been published in Media-N, Flash Art, Cinephile, Runner Magazine, and Utopian Studies. At the University of Denver, she teaches classes at the intersection of art history and critical race and ethnic studies.
