Stephanie Cheng, a teaching professor in the Lamont School of Music at the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences, was inducted in October into the Steinway & Sons Teacher Hall of Fame, an honor that recognizes exemplary educators who have made a significant impact on piano teaching and performance.

Steinway & Sons, founded in 1853, is one of the world’s most respected piano makers, long associated with craftsmanship, artistry, and the highest standards in music. Its Teacher Hall of Fame celebrates instructors who embody those same values, making Cheng’s recognition a distinguished milestone in her career.

“Being inducted into the Steinway & Sons Music Teacher Hall of Fame is deeply meaningful,” Cheng said. “It affirms the care, dedication, and high standards I bring to my students every day, and it connects me to a long tradition of teachers who exemplify excellence in music education.”

Cheng’s teaching philosophy centers on developing students not only as pianists, but as whole artists. “Teaching allows me to invest in people, not just their piano playing, but their growth as musicians and human beings,” she said. Mentoring students through their musical and professional paths is one of the most fulfilling parts of her work: “Every student brings a unique story, curiosity, and potential, and being part of that journey is endlessly inspiring.”

She credits her students as essential partners in her success. “I’m grateful to my students, past and present, whose dedication motivates me every day,” Cheng said. She also expressed appreciation for Steinway’s enduring support: “Their commitment to excellence and to music education has been a meaningful part of my artistic life, and I’m honored to receive this recognition from them.”

The College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences is proud to recognize Professor Cheng for her outstanding contributions to liberal arts education.
