Susan Walter, Program Director

Susan
As a first-generation college student one of the biggest challenges that Susan faced was deciding on a major —a process that involved a lot of questioning, uncertainty and changing her mind four times! After some time abroad, she ultimately chose to major in Spanish, a decision that she has never regretted. She earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin and completed her MA and PhD in Hispanic Literature at the University of Virginia. Currently, she is an Associate Professor in the Dept. of Spanish Language, Literary and Cultural Studies here at DU.

Now in her second year leading the college’s first gen program, she focuses on expanding student access to resources, supporting the growth of the mentorship program and strengthening students’ sense of belonging on campus. She brings to the role a deep commitment to mentoring students and helping them navigate the many decisions and transitions that come with college life. Outside of her role as CAHSS first gen director, you can also join her for twice weekly meditation sessions in the student lounge in Sturm Hall. When she isn’t on campus, she loves to take hikes in the Colorado high country, do yoga, hang out with her pup Coco and explore the food scene in Denver.

Emily DiBella, Program Coordinator

Emily
Emily DiBella is a graduate student in the Social Work and International Development dual-degree program at the University of Denver. Originally from Salt Lake City, she completed her undergraduate degree in International Studies at The University of Utah. Emily is currently involved with the Better Together program at Foothills Animal Shelter, which supports individuals experiencing crises by providing temporary boarding for their pets and human resources. Prior to graduate school, Emily lived in Malaga, Spain and served as a Project Director with AMIGOS in Panama. These experiences solidified her passion for mentoring, cultural learning, and program building, leading her to her role in the CAHSS First-Gen program!
