Careers & Internships

Building a Foundation for Your Future

In the Department of Media, Film and Journalism Studies, postgraduate success is not just a goal, it’s a standard. You’ll gain hands-on experience, foundational knowledge and critical thinking skills that translate to outstanding careers in media and beyond, and we take immense pride in our students’ accomplishments. Our alumni work for organizations ranging from World Relief to ESPN and in roles such as director of the White House Visitors Office and communications coordinator at Colorado Ski Country USA. Whether you continue your academic studies or pursue a career, our faculty will help you design a path to reach your goals.

Part of our students’ success is made possible by a wide array of on-campus and off-campus opportunities. In the dynamic fields of media, film, journalism studies and strategic communication, internships and extracurriculars are extensions of the classroom that give you opportunities to explore your passions in a professional setting. Our Internship Director supports students in finding the right opportunity. When you participate in engaging internships, you test and refine your knowledge in a professional environment. Most importantly, you experience learning in a new way, giving you the tools to excel.

Why Media, Film and Journalism Studies at DU

We develop critical thinkers who use communication to improve our communities and the world and work toward equity. Our students are prepared for the challenges most relevant to media professionals today, learning about topics such as countering disinformation campaigns and fake news, engaging with activist media and supporting emergent social movements, and using big data and data analytics to tell evidence-based stories.

We encourage intellectual curiosity and personal creativity to sharpen analytical skills and artistic expression. We pride ourselves on giving students the tools they need to succeed in any career they choose, now and far into the future.

“This internship has given me many opportunities to 'learn by doing' and to put the skills I have developed in graduate school to use. I have been able to participate in all the aspects of a statewide campaign, including TV, radio, print, corporate sponsorship, committees, and so much more.”
