Kathryn Robinson Talks About her Graduate Experience
What is your current professional position and what do you love about it?
I am the Communications Coordinator for Colorado Ski Country USA. I work to encourage skiing and snowboarding in Colorado through a variety of communications strategies. What I love about my job is that I get to take so many skills I learned in my Master's in Strategic Communication — strategic planning, writing, digital media and media relations — and apply them to an industry I love.
How did your Master's degree and the networks you developed as a student prepare you for what you are doing now?
The relationships I built with my professors and peers, along with the experience I gained in the internship I completed with the help of the Department of Media, Film & Journalism Studies, led me to the position I have now. My professors served as mentors and guided me in learning about strategic communication. They encouraged me to pursue my interests. And they even wrote the recommendation letters I needed to get my current job.
What was your favorite thing about your graduate experience at the University of Denver?
I had the opportunity to conduct research, complete a professional internship, work in a mentorship role with undergraduate students as a Teaching Assistant, and I made life-long friends. My in-class learning experiences were insightful and enormously helpful in my education, but my favorite thing were the friendships and relationships I developed with my classmates and in my extracurricular activities.
What advice do you have for prospective students who are thinking about getting a Master's degree in Media and Public Communication at DU?
I wasn't sure if this Master's program, and the move to Denver, would be the right fit for me until I visited the campus. If you're considering attending, try your best to visit the school and the department. You'll get the opportunity to sit in on a class, speak to your future professors, and feel the difference it makes to be in a supportive community like the one I found in the Department of Media, Film & Journalism Studies.
