This page has been developed by the Lamont School of Music to try and answer questions that Lamont students may have about the upcoming fall 2020 quarter. It reflects the information and policies we currently know. Keeping in mind that some fluidity exists as things evolve with the pandemic and responses to it by the state of Colorado, the city of Denver and the University of Denver, we will work toward keeping it up to date.

Lamont-Specific Questions About Facilities
Will I have access to practice rooms?
Yes. Students taking lessons and participating in ensembles will sign up online for time blocks separated by breaks that are necessary for recirculating air before the next person uses the room. Links to the online signup form will be provided in the Lamont tab of PioneerWeb. You must only use rooms during your reserved time(s). Individuals must not enter any room that is not their assigned practice room. Reservations for practice rooms must not exceed 90 minutes. Only one individual is allowed in the practice room at any time. All practice rooms must remain vacant for at least 30 minutes after each session in which the room has been used.
Sanitation protocols must be followed. They will be posted on the door to each room and in the Lamont tab of PioneerWeb. Brass players must (a) not allow saliva to collect on the floor; (b) use absorbents to collect all saliva before emptying instrument’s valves into the trash; and (c) dispose of used adsorbents in the trash bin upon exiting the practice room.
May I use the elevator?
Yes, two people are allowed in the elevator at a time.
Will the student lounge be open? May I use the refrigerator and microwave?
We are discontinuing the use of the lounge as a lounge. The lounge will be kept open so that you can retrieve instruments and other items from your locker while following social-distancing guidelines. There will be no use of the refrigerator or microwave allowed in any lounges (the same in the faculty lounge).
May I use the water fountains? May I fill up my water bottle?
Yes, you can use the water bottle fill stations. There are fill stations on floors 1, 3, 4 and 5. You will not be able to drink directly from the fountain.
Is it safe for me to use the computers and keyboards in the music tech lab?
You should not assume equipment is sterile prior to use. Use the cleaning supplies provided and following all posted safety and building protocols will drastically reduce the risk of spreading germs and picking up germs from the computers and keyboards.
Will I be able to use the Music Library?
The Music Library will be offering virtual services and curbside pickup at the beginning of Fall Quarter. Along with the main university library, we will not be allowed to open to patrons until the University has entered Phase IV. For the University’s current phase, consult: DU Plans and Protocols
When the University enters Phase IV, access to and occupancy of the Music Library will be carefully regulated to ensure safe conditions for the Lamont Community.
The DU Music Library Guide will be developed as an up-to-date source of information on Music Library services and policies as we move through the five phases of our return to campus plan. (See DU Plans and Protocols.) It will also serve as a communication portal with Music Library staff, and a link to electronic sources and information useful to the Lamont Community. As we develop new services, policies or resources, they will be posted there, so check back often.
How will I be able to access print materials from the Music Library?
Print materials in the Music Library will be scanned for electronic delivery on student, faculty or staff request. We will scan up to 50% of a single title per request. Please request scans of books and scores by choosing the "Book Chapter Request" option in the Interlibrary Loan request form: DU DVP/Logon.html. (We will use the ILL request form even when we have the title in our own collection.) If you have any questions about scanning requests, please email Woody Colahan at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We will also provide curbside pickup of Music Library print items and physical recordings while the Music Library is closed to patrons. Request materials for curbside pickup using the catalog for full instructions.
Until the Music Library is open to patrons, all material borrowed from the Music Library will have to be returned through the Main Library book drop outside the Anderson Academic Commons.
The DU library catalog can be accessed at DU Library Website. It is sometimes challenging to find the right music materials in the catalog, so please know that the library staff is eager to help you. If you have questions, please email MusicLibrary@du.edu. You may also contact us with a chat box on the: DU Music Library Guide, which will be staffed as much as possible during the hours 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. There is also a helpful video on searching the catalog for music materials at YouTube.
Curbside pickup is also available from the Main Library, through the form linked from this page: DU Library FAQ. There will be no deliveries between the Music Library and the Main Library, so materials in each collection will have to be requested individually.
Will I be able to use Prospector and Interlibrary Loan (ILL)?
Prospector and Interlibrary Loan print borrowing services will resume before the beginning of Fall Quarter, and these requests will be made in the normal way. All Prospector and ILL loans will have to be picked up from the Main Library.
May I rent a locker for my instrument this year?
Yes, please contact Michael Furry for more details: Michael.Furry@du.edu
Lockers must only be used by the individual to whom the locker is assigned. Students must minimize time accessing their lockers, and students must not congregate in hallways and lounge areas adjacent to the lockers.
How safe will the air be in the Newman Center?
The Newman Center is serviced by multiple, up-to-date HVAC systems. While we cannot guarantee that the air in the building will be free from all aerosols that may contain the virus, our facilities team is working diligently to provide the safest possible environment for students, faculty and staff. This includes additional air filtration systems in rehearsals rooms and Gates Concert Hall, increased air flow and increased air turnover rates. In addition, the occupancy levels number of the Newman Center will be reduced, thus limiting the amount of people in the building.
I have an online class just before an in-person class (or vice versa). 10 minutes isn’t enough time for me to travel from my dorm/apartment to campus. Can I do my online class in Lamont or another public space on campus so I can be on time for my course?
As long as all safety and building protocols are followed (wearing a mask, keeping 6 ft. of distance from others, using headphones to avoid excessive noise), you may use the facility as needed for online classes.
May I access Lamont when I don’t have a scheduled class, such as to practice, use the computer lab, use the library, do music homework, etc.?
Yes, music students have 6:30 a.m. - 11:30 p.m. access to the building with their DU ID cards. As long as all safety and building protocols are followed, as well as policies for each room, the facility is available for music students to use as needed.
May I eat my lunch in Joy Burns Plaza?
Because a mask is required at all times in the building, we ask that you eat lunch off site or, weather permitting, outside.
Are the Newman Center restrooms safe?
Some stalls and urinals will be blocked off to promote physical distancing. Cleaning and disinfection of restrooms will be completed by the University in accordance with DU-wide procedures.
Lamont-Specific Questions About Courses
What should I expect for my music academic classes?
Music academic classes will be taught online in many cases. In other cases, classes will be taught in a hybrid format or in person. Only approved Lamont’s classrooms will be used for small ensemble rehearsals or in-person lessons, since faculty studios are not large enough for small ensemble rehearsals, and in some cases are not large enough for lessons under current distancing guidelines. For in-person class meetings, masks will be worn, physical distancing will be maintained and cleaning protocols will be followed as per guidelines posted in the building.
What should I expect for my lessons?
Studio lessons will be taught either in person, in a hybrid format or online; it will vary by studio. In person lessons will take place either in a faculty member’s studio or another designated space in the Newman Center and each session will be limited in duration. Masks will be worn at all times by both the faculty member and the student. Appropriate physical distancing will be maintained, which will vary by instrument. For in-person lessons, no more than two people (the student and the faculty member) are permitted in the session.
For in-person voice lessons, vocal coaching and wind instrument lessons, the faculty member and student must maintain at least 12 feet distance at all times. Sessions must not last longer than 30 minutes, after which the room must remain empty for at least 30 minutes and the faculty member must leave the studio for that period. For wind instrument lessons, bell covers must be used, absorbents must be used to collect saliva and absorbents must be disposed of in trash bins upon exiting.
For in-person string, percussion and keyboard lessons, the faculty member and student must maintain at least 6 feet distance at all times. Sessions must not last longer than 50 minutes, after which the room must remain empty for at least 10 minutes and the faculty member must leave the studio for that period.
What should I expect for my small ensemble rehearsals?
Coachings and ensemble practice will be scheduled in larger spaces. Coachings cannot take place in faculty studios. Rehearsals will happen in spaces other than practice rooms, which are limited to one person’s use at a time. Masks will be worn and appropriate physical distancing will be maintained.
Small ensembles involving winds and brass must be conducted only in Newman 100, 130, 140, Gates Hall or Hamilton Hall. Rehearsals must be limited in duration to no more than 30 minutes for Newman 100, 130, 140 and for Hamilton Hall, followed by a period of no less than 30 minutes with no individuals in the room. Rehearsals must be limited in duration to no more than 45 minutes for Gates Hall, followed by a period of no less than 15 minutes with no individuals in the room. Rehearsals must be within the posted room capacity limits for each location with all attendees (students and faculty members) maintaining at least 12 feet social distancing from each other during the ensemble rehearsal and at least 6 feet social distancing as they enter and exit the rehearsal room.
Small ensembles involving only strings will occur in large volume rooms (Newman 100, 130 and 140). The faculty member and all students must wear face coverings at all times. The faculty member and all students must maintain at least 6 feet distance at all times. Sessions must not last longer than 50 minutes. After each session, the room must remain empty for at least 30 minutes, and the faculty member must leave the room for that period.
What should I expect for my larger ensemble rehearsals?
Larger ensembles will be smaller than normal. Rehearsals will be limited in duration and interspersed with breaks following University protocols.
Rehearsals will be permitted only in approved spaces and, when possible, will occur outside. Vocal and wind ensembles will have the highest priority for the scheduling of outside classrooms.
Ensemble rehearsals that are conducted indoors must be conducted only in Newman 100, 130 or 140, Gates Hall, or Hamilton Hall. Rehearsals must be limited in duration to no more than 30 minutes for Newman 100, 130, 140 and for Hamilton Hall, followed by a period of no less than 30 minutes with no individuals in the room. Rehearsals must be limited in duration to no more than 45 minutes for Gates Hall, followed by a period of no less than 15 minutes with no individuals in the room. Rehearsals must be within the posted room capacity limits for each location with all attendees (students and faculty members) maintaining at least 12 feet social distancing from each other during the ensemble rehearsal and at least 6 feet social distancing as they enter and exit the rehearsal room.
What about performances?
While there will be no audience in the hall, we plan to stream performances live.
What will mask use look like in ensembles?
Masks shall be worn at all times. Masks must be worn in rehearsals, lessons, and ensemble performances.
What technology must I have access to for lessons, ensembles, and classes?
DU’s technology requirements have not been altered during the pandemic. For Lamont’s laptop requirements consult: DU Program Specific
Please note that all incoming first year undergraduate students are required to own a keyboard for use in Theory, Aural Skills and other classes. The keyboard must have a minimum of 61 keys with internal sound and headphones. Alternatively, students can use a 61 key USB MIDI controller keyboard with suitable software to produce sound.
Given the current restrictions on use of Lamont practice rooms, if you are not an incoming first-year undergraduate student and you do not already own a keyboard as described above, we recommend purchasing one to support your musical work in your dorm or off-campus home.
For online courses, especially those with a performance component, we recommend using an external microphone and audio interface with your computer.
May I meet faculty and GTAs during office hours?
As per current DU policy, all office hours will occur online or by phone unless instructors can ensure proper distancing, which the University defines as a room 200 square feet or larger. GTA offices at Lamont are too small to ensure proper distancing.
Will I be given sheet music for my ensembles or do I need an electronic device (like a tablet) for reading my music?
Yes, you will be given sheet music, which you cannot share. You do not need an electronic device like a tablet.
Lamont-Specific Questions About Curricular Requirements
How will end-of-quarter juries work?
Policies and procedures for juries at the end of fall quarter will be developed in each performance area. Consult your area chair for the most current information.
Please note that during fall quarter final exams will be held online after Thanksgiving, so juries held after the end of classes will similarly need to be held online.
How will recitals work in the fall?
Recitals will be performed in approved Lamont venues and will be livestreamed. There will be no in-person audiences. Scheduling will occur before school starts for those who deferred their spring 2020 recitals and will begin on the first day of classes for all other students.

Will convocations still be scheduled and required?
It is likely that convocations will continue over Zoom during fall quarter. Convocation dates, as per usual, can be found on the Lamont tab in PioneerWeb. As convocation is required for all students in BM, BA, MM, and MA programs, we anticipate taking attendance through methodology that is currently being developed.

How do I check out instruments this year?

Will be I able to meet with Rachel Lim for advising?
Yes! Rachel will be available for advising via e-mail, phone, and Zoom this fall. You can schedule an appointment; please remember that all appointment times are for the Mountain Time Zone. Because Rachel’s office is not large enough to allow for students to meet in person while following the university’s physical distancing guidelines, all advising will be completed remotely.
May I still get cookies from Rachel?

I want to take a leave of absence. What do I do?
Start by having a conversation with Rachel Lim (Rachel.Lim@du.edu), Lamont’s full-time student advisor, and Stephen Campbell, Lamont’s director of admission (Stephen.L.Campbell@du.edu). The process for taking a leave of absence is different for new incoming students and returning/continuing students.
Will the Lamont office be open?
All office hours will occur online or by phone unless instructors can ensure proper distancing. Most faculty offices are too small to ensure proper distancing. GTA offices at Lamont are too small to ensure proper distancing.
May I have a work-study job at Lamont this fall?
If you are interested exploring your option of a work-study award, you will need to contact the Student Employment department at DU directly at email@example.com with any questions and review your financial aid package with them for work study award eligibility.
Once you are eligible and have accepted your award then you can login to your Pioneer Careers Online Student account. On your homepage, select OCI and Job Listings. On this screen you will see a search bar at the top with filters. To view student employment positions please be sure the "Type of Job" filter is selected and choose Student Employment: "On Campus" as the job type. Once this filter is applied, you will only see on-campus jobs. To ensure the position you are viewing is a work-study eligible job, be sure to check the Compensation field in the post. This will say "Work Study Required." If you do not find Lamont Jobs posted on that site please contact the Lamont Business Manager at Smaragda.Delageorgou@du.edu for in-house work-study needs.
Do I need to purchase any PPE specific to my instrument, such as bell covers, pads for emptying spit valves, etc.?
We have ordered PPE specific to instruments for students, including masks specially designed for singers. Musicians playing wind instruments must use bell covers or instrument bags for trumpet, trombone, euphonium, horn, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone and oboe. For those instruments, you must use absorbents to collect saliva when emptying your instrument and dispose of used absorbents in the trash bins upon exiting ensemble rehearsals and practice rooms.
How frequently do I need to deep clean my instrument?
Consult your studio instructor to discuss best practices during the pandemic with regard to cleaning your instrument safely.
Will there still be funds for the Lamont Student Professional Developmental Program (formerly the “Joe Docksey fund”)?
Yes, there will be funding available for student professional development activities. This past year we funded students who completed professional development programs online. That alternative will still exist this year.
How will I find out about job and gig opportunities? Will they still be posted in the building? If so, how will I find out about these opportunities if I’m not able to enter the building during part of the fall quarter?
