Spirituals Project

A Longstanding Tradition of Musical Healing & Activism

The DU Spirituals Project Choir brings together singers of all ages and backgrounds with varying degrees of musical experience. The group was founded to preserve and revitalize spirituals, an oral tradition of work songs that were created and first sung by African Americans in slavery.

The Spirituals Project provides singers the opportunity to not only perform these sacred songs but also to learn the history and cultural context of the enslaved Africans in America in the 18th and 19th centuries. We welcome all to join the effort to carry on the tradition of these uniquely American songs.
