Studying Theatre at Lamont

Students in our Department of Theatre join a vibrant community of artists where hands-on learning, creative exploration, and collaboration shape every stage of their education. In our intentionally small program, students build meaningful relationships with faculty and peers while gaining a strong foundation across every aspect of theatre-making and the flexibility to deepen the disciplines that inspire them most.

Rather than training students for a single specialty, we emphasize the craft of storytelling through broad artistic training and a deep understanding of the entire theatrical process. Students develop experience in acting, directing, design, production, and leadership while engaging with straight plays, contemporary works, classical theatre, devised performance, and collaborative ensemble creation—building the versatility needed to thrive in today's interdisciplinary performing arts landscape.

Theatre students at Lamont learn by doing. In classrooms, rehearsal/performance spaces, and shops, students build the story from initial concept to final performance, gaining experience as actors, directors, designers, technicians, and stage managers while developing the artistic, technical, and collaborative skills that define successful theatre professionals.

Alumni have founded and led successful theatre companies, built careers as actors, directors, designers, and producers, and pursued creative paths in fields ranging from puppetry and animation to film and production. Graduates of the program are shaping the future of the arts as entrepreneurs, collaborators, and creative leaders, demonstrating the versatility and impact of a theatre education at Lamont

  • Capstone

Year four culminates in a Senior Capstone that puts you in the director's chair. Each theatre student produces a fully realized 10-minute play—from selecting (or even writing) the script to casting actors, leading rehearsals, managing a production budget, and collaborating with a team of designers and technicians. Over three weeks, you'll bring your artistic vision to life before presenting your work in a public performance. It's an immersive, real-world experience that challenges you to lead, create, collaborate, and showcase everything you've learned as a theatre artist.

  • Theatre students performing

Theatre students act in, design for, and direct six productions each year!

  • theatre student making costumes

Lamont theatre students bring characters to life one stitch at a time. Learn the art of costume construction and discover how every detail helps tell the story.

  • theatre lighting project

One of the many distinctions you can pursue at Lamont is technology and production. This includes lighting design and its use in creating dynamic scenes on stage, like this recent student production.

  • Theatre tech program

In our Theatre Tech Intern Program, students are paid to design and build sets for theatre companies throughout the city of Denver. This is just one of the many ways Lamont helps students start their careers during their time here.
