On Wednesday, April 30, Interim Dean Rachel Walsh met with the Student Leadership Council (SLC) and other students from the College of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences (CAHSS). During the meeting, Walsh answered questions posed by the students and opened the doors for conversation about the current state of CAHSS and what her role as dean entails.
Walsh described her role as being responsible for day-to-day operations of the college by supporting faculty, staff and students. “I try to ground myself in the mission of the university and the mission of CAHSS,” Walsh said.
Walsh was adamant about upholding the college’s mission, despite certain restrictions from the federal government and prevailing financial issues in higher education across the country. “We are committed to DEI. Our core values are creating a sense of community and belonging for all,” she said.
She also noted that she wants to establish transparency within the student population, creating opportunities for students to feel more informed and involved. Walsh said, “If you feel you are in the dark, come talk to me.”
Paula Adamo, associate dean, said "This was a great chance for our students to meet with CAHSS leadership, have their voices heard and engage in conversation. We look forward to continuing these practices in the fall with our new dean, Sahara Byrne."
In the Fall, CAHSS leadership plans to hold similar opportunities for students with Dean Byrne, lending an ear and establishing further transparency. For students looking to continue conversations with Walsh and learn more about her role and the state of the college, her office hours are every Wednesday, from 12 – 1 p.m. in the Sturm Hall second-floor student lounge.
