The University of Denver Associate Professor of Emergent Digital Practices had spent his career doing sound-related research and teaching, so he decided to take a big step: writing a book.
In his fourth year of DU’s creative writing PhD program, Mark Mayer’s debut story collection won the Michener Copernicus Prize. The stories share a collective backdrop—one rooted in the tradition of circus acts and freak shows. “The characters in my stories adjust themselves to reality by imagining what exists beyond or outside of it,” Mayer said.
After realizing there was a gap in music education, Gergana Argirova (BM '10, MM '12) opened a music school for students with autism. The London Music Box has received tremendous grassroots support, evidenced by the 6,000 votes received to win Argirova the prestigious Small Business Entrepreneur of the Year Award.
